Interview With Madame Vileroy

In a corner, partially hidden by a shadow, sat a lady. She was blond and covered from head to toe in a flowing black overcoat, as if she were afraid that a single drop of sunlight would enter the house and burn her up. (Page 15, Another Faust ARC)

Tell us your favourite memory of home.
Why don’t you tell me yours, dear?

Naww, this interview is all about you. ;) How have the children been?
Wonderful. They’ve been brave enough to give up everything, and now they have everything. That’s how the world works.

It must be hard, raising five children. Why did you decide to do so?
Raising? What a silly choice of words. I’m not their wet nurse, dear.

Why these five children in particular?
Because they were willing.

Did they decide to follow you of their own free will?
Of course. That’s how it works.

Is there a contract you ask them to sign?
Always. But you can only see it if you show me the mark of a willing heart.

Why did you decide to take these five children away from their homes, and then debut them 5 years later with powers?
I didn’t “take” them. They came to me. As for debuts, what debut? Are you talking about that Christmas party? Why should that be called a debut? You don’t know how many great things they did in the years after they joined my household. But that’s the thing about humans. They think that all stories begin at the moment they stumble upon it. Do you think that I as born at the beginning of chapter 1?

Do you have any powers of your own?
Why do you ask, dear? Is there a particular power that you’d like to have over the world? Is there something you crave?

*panics* No, no, really, we should keep this about you. What's the ultimate goal for you?
Only to help my children.

What are you exactly?
Only a mother. A protector.

Do you celebrate any occasions, like... Christmas?
I celebrate. Not single days, but the kind of achievements that happen over the ages.

What else can we expect from you?
Whatever you like.

Thanks for that scintillating yet slightly creepy interview, Madame Vileroy!

Interview With Victoria Faust

You're only as good as your last performance. (Page 4, Another Faust ARC)

Tell us your favourite memory of home.
No, thanks.

How has Madame Vileroy been treating you?
I’m her favorite.

Who are you closest to?
Please. Can we have a less prissy question?

O.O Okay... What was your first experience in using your powers?
Vileroy gave me the power to cheat, so I tried it on her. It didn’t work. It hurt. I don’t want to talk about it.

Why do you want to win everything? Don't you think it's a bit... unfair, using your power to win?
Why? You use your brain to win. I use mine. Mine’s just better than yours.

I'm sure others have felt threatened by your success.
I’m sure they have.

What's the ultimate goal for you?
To be important, and powerful, and to be able to say F*** you to everyone.

"Winning isn't everything." What do you have to say to that?
Shut up. You sound like such a loser!

*cough*What a... Who's your inspiration? Why?
Madame Vileroy. Because she’s better than everyone and she knows how to use it.

What do you excel in? What are your favourite subjects?
I excel at everything. I don’t have favorites. I don’t need favorites.

Thanks for that wonderful *cough* interview, Victoria! I must be coming down with something. ;)

Interview With Valentin Faust

Someone once said that 'French is the language that turns dirt into romance.' Valentin knew this to be true because he lived in Paris, and when he wasn't feeling romantic, he was feeling like dirt. (Page 10-11, Another Faust ARC)

Tell us your favourite memory of home.
Our maid.

How has Madame Vileroy been treating you?
Oh we’re thick as thieves, we are.

Who are you closest to?
I feel a certain closeness to you, right now. Maybe we should see where this goes?

*blush* Maybe next time. ;) What would you say your best trait is?
The ability to recognize genius when I see it.

What was your first experience in using your powers?
Powers?

What's the ultimate goal for you?
Perfect score on the Maxim 100 test.

Rewriting real life scenes must be exhausting, using up your creativity. What's the one scene you've rewritten that you're most proud of?
Well, it used to be Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Faust for a couple weeks…

Is there any writer or poet that has influenced you in any way?
I try not to be influenced by other writers; that way it’s just me and my reader. Outside influence is a third wheel. I go for that.

Can you write a short poem for our readers here? Describe Another Faust in a poem.
Well, I just wrote this one myself:
I’m not plagued by doubt or scruple,
Scared by neither Hell nor Devil –
Instead all Joy is snatched away,
What’s worth knowing, I can’t say.

Thanks for the interview and poem, Valentin!

Interview With Christian Faust

As he squeezed his eyes closed, Christian wished for anything but this. He'd give anything not to be hungry all the time. But he didn't have anything to give, and so it was useless to wish. (Page 7, Another Faust ARC)

Tell us your favourite memory of home.
My mom used to make a full breakfast, the works, every Sunday.

How has Madame Vileroy been treating you?
No different than anyone else, I guess. Whatever.

Who are you closest to?
Bice. I was in a jam, once, and she was the only one who was sitting by me when I woke up.

What was your first experience in using your powers?
I won the junior national Olympics in five sports. Can’t do that without some help.

What's your favourite sport? What is it exactly that you love so much about it?
Football. You can slam into people and no one can sue for assault and battery.

How much experience in sports do you have?
Practically none. When I touch somebody, it’s weird. Their muscle memory transfers over. It’s like gaining instinct. I go to a lot of meet-and-greets for sports stars. It’s good to shake their hands.

What's the ultimate goal for you?
Endorsements from Adidas and Nike at the same time.

What other skills, other than sports do you have?
Isn’t that enough? I write sometimes. But, I mean, I can play ALL of them.

Thanks for the interview, Christian!

Interview With Belle Faust

Belle could tell that Bice wanted to say something, but for all her languages, Bice just couldnt communicate that well. (Page 10, Another Faust ARC)

Tell us your favourite memory of home.
Um, home? What do you mean? I’ve always lived with Madame Vileroy. My favorite memories aren’t at home.

How has Madame Vileroy been treating you?
There’s a word in Mandarin that you can quite translate. Something like: torturously terrible.

Who are you closest to, other than Belle?
Valentin has always seemed like the youngest of us, but Christian has always seemed like the most vulnerable. I like his company best. It’s as good as being alone.

How do you feel about Belle not looking the same as you?
Um, I don’t know. Why are you asking me? I don’t know.

What's the ultimate goal for you?
Body language is the hardest.

What was your first experience in using your powers?
I can’t remember a first time. Time always seemed to stop when I got lost in a book. I guess, at some point, Madame Vileroy made it really possible. I remember closing my book once and looking up to see my sneeze from two hours ago suspended in midair. That’s my first memory of actually “powers”. Kind of embarrassing.

Why does time seem to stop when you're reading a book?
It does that for you, too?

Yeah! Though it's not really the same for you, is it? How many languages have you mastered yet?
I thought I had all of them, and then I went to the zoo…

What's your favourite language?
Farsi.

Can you please describe Another Faust in Farsi?
Nemee doonam. Harr ketab khoob o bad dareh.

Thanks for the interview, Bice!

Interview With Belle Faust

It might not be so bad sharing a face if at least it was beautiful. If she were fantastically beautiful, no one would mind that she couldn't blather out a few pleasantries in Mandarin. But Bice had talent; there was no denying that. That was how she set herself apart from her twin. But what did Belle have? (Page 9, Another Faust ARC)

Tell us your favourite memory of home.
Bice and I got into a fight and she said, “Who cares whose skirt that is? You wouldn’t notice if the world burned down around your ears.” So I snuck into mom’s room and stole her nail polish and locked myself in the bathroom. When mom found me, she asked what I was doing and I told her that I was putting a drop of nail polish deep inside my belly button, where it would be secret, because I suspected that if the world burned down, Bice would try to pass herself off as me. She laughed and said I was such a clever girl.

How has Madame Vileroy been treating you?
Nice, I guess. She says I’m her favorite, but I’m not sure that’s true. I’m not sure I want to be.

Who are you closest to, other than Bice?
Why do you say, “other than Bice”?

I hope you don't mind me saying this, but you sure don't look like Bice, your twin!
Thanks! But please don’t say that to her.

You're gorgeous. Do you consider that a power or a privilege?
What’s the difference? It’s a privilege to have power over people.

What would you say your best trait is, other than your beauty?
I think I’m pretty smart. Most people don’t notice, but I am. Did you know that I aced all my science classes?

That's great! Congratulations! What other skills do you have?
Stupid stuff. I can paint. I like flowers, all beautiful things. I don’t have time for that stuff now.

That's not stupid, it's pretty creative. I'm sure you must have had offers to go to Hollywood and so on. Would you take the offers if they came your way?
Yes.

What's the ultimate goal for you?
To be loved. To make people catch their breath when they look at me. To be different from Bice.

Who's your inspiration? Why?
Audrey Hepburn. Because she isn’t just stunning, but she’s unique. No one will ever look like her again. And my mom. She was more than just pretty.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Do you have anything to say to that?
Yeah, a certain kind of beauty is like that. Not the kind I want though. Some beauty isn’t subjective. It’s just better.

Great answer! I don't think many people think about it that way. If you were a beauty product, what would you be and why?
Perfume, because you can’t see it, but it’s the most powerful.

What beauty product would Another Faust be and why?
Another Faust is about us and Vileroy. I guess our relationship with Vileroy is like a distorted mirror... Everything is reflected in it, but it’s all wrong.

Thanks for the interview, Belle!

Interview With Dina Nayeri

Another Faust would have been incomplete without partner in crime: Dina Nayeri.

Tell us about research for the book. Did you travel around the different cities to get a feel for how life is?
Dina Nayeri: We’ve traveled a lot already. Daniel and I have lived all over Europe. I live in Amsterdam now and used to live in Paris. Of course, we both have strong ties to New York. So yeah, we like to travel and we do it often. You really can’t understand a place unless you’ve been there and lived among the people.

Tell us more about the Faustian bargain.
The Faustian Bargain is a reference to Goethe’s Faust, a play in which the devil bets God that he can make Faust (God’s favorite, and a scholar who is trying to learn everything there is to know in the world) betray God. The devil appears to Faust and offers him a bargain that he will serve Faust and give him everything he wants on earth if he agrees to serve him in hell.

If you could make your very own Faustian bargain, what would you make it for?
I wouldn’t, because a soul is the only thing on this earth that makes us unique. But is there something I want? Yes! I want to have a big family, I want to have throngs of friends, and I want my voice to be heard and respected.

Why did you choose to focus on five kids?
We were trying to pinpoint some of the most common (and often most excruciating) desires that teens have and to create a character that embodies each one. Some of these desires are so empty that it takes a really terrible person to sell their soul for it. But others are much more desperate and unavoidable, like Christian who has never had even the most basic comforts.

Why do their marks only appear under water?
Good question! Because it has to be a deeply embedded and daily reminder, but it can't be so readily visible to other people.

How was the writing process? Was it hard working together? I imagine there must have been squabbles, as can be seen here. :P
Yes, the video sort of says it all!! :) But yes, we did fight a lot. But we learned to work together and respect each other’s individual styles. At first, it was hard because I kept pushing my outlines on Daniel and he kept wanting to be more spontaneous, and we just kept arguing over tiny stupid stuff. But then, we learned how to give in to each other’s quirks and to be patient so our arguments could be about the important, substantive issues.

Who's your favourite character, and why?
DN: It’s hard to beat Madame Vileroy. She’s evil incarnate. So that makes her extremely intriguing.
Madame Vileroy: What Dina and Daniel think isn’t important.... Not yet. Not until later, when I decide.

Uhhh... oh. What song would you attribute to each of the major characters? It'll be the one song that (if this is a movie) will play when the character is introduced to the viewer for the first time, in slo mo.
HAHA! Great question! This is just off the top of my head. I’m sure Dan could do better.
Valentin - Gives you Hell by Great American Rejects
Victoria – Shove it by Santogold
Belle – Love Game by Lady Gaga
Bice - Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
Christian - All Apologies by Nirvana or Nothing Like You and I by Perishers
Madame Vileroy – O Fortuna by Carl Orff

Do the children miss their families?
No. The ones that don’t remember, don’t remember and the ones that do were never all that happy.

Let's talk about the governess. What was Madame Vileroy before she became what she is now? Was she ever a human, or an overambitious demon who doesn't now when to cut her losses? Are there many of her kind, or better yet, only one of her but in many different forms?
Very good question! Much of Madame Vileroy’s history is revealed in book 2, Another Pan. But your guess is correct, she does have an origin, and she does take on many different forms. But what was her original form? And her original name? That will be revealed in book 2. However, I can tell you that the biggest hint we’ve put in book one is the use of the word “legion”. Madame Vileroy says “there are legions of us” and later, you see an excerpt from the Book of Legion. That is a biblical reference to a demon called legion that is actually thousands of demons.

What does the red and blue box represent?
To me they represent the different realities that can be presented, the different moods the same space can take on depending on how you choose to view it. It’s about perception and how what you see isn’t always the truth.

Describe each of the main characters in 5 words.
Valentin — Possessed, frightened, insecure, charming, sexy
Bice — Traveler, lonely twin, mother-figure
Belle — Misguided beauty, underestimated, selfish
Victoria — Ruthless, cruel, desperate, soulless, alone
Christian — Redeemable human, searching, truly accomplished
Madame Vileroy — Lord of all things creepy and buzzing (Me: Hey, that's more than 5 words! :P)

Tell us five good to know facts about you.

  • Most people think I’m a tough cookie, but I’m really nice.
  • I’m a great cook.
  • I’m both left and right brained.
  • I’m a TV-aholic.
  • I have a tattoo!

Thanks for the interview, Dina!

Interview with Daniel Nayeri

Let's welcome one half of the dynamic duo who made Another Faust possible: Daniel Nayeri.

Tell us about research for the book. Did you travel around the different cities to get a feel for how life is?
Well, Dina and I have lived in all the locations we mention in the books, so thankfully we were sticking to the old adage, “write what you know.”

Tell us more about the Faustian bargain.
I have always liked the pre-Renaissance paintings of people in woods making deals with the devil. One, because back then they thought you had to kiss the devil’s butt in order to seal the deal…so, instant childish humor right there, and in a museum no less. And two, because it showed people in the woods at night, dancing with the devil. That always made sense to me, the idea that the bargain isn’t just a one-time exchange. It’s not so clear-cut. It’s more like building a relationship, communing with the devil over a long period of time, in order to get something you want. In the images, the devil dances in front of everyone, tantalizing them on. That’s one reason we had Vileroy staying with the kids, continuing them down the path she wants for them. It wasn’t just, “sign on the dotted line…great, and now your soul, please. And here’s your change.” It’s over the course of a whole life.

If you could make your very own Faustian bargain, what would you make it for?
I should probably come up with a better answer for this, but I don’t have one. I’m a huge fan of rice pudding….

*hands rice pudding* Why did you choose to focus on five kids?
Five adults would be boring. Five chickens would make for terrible dialogue.

How was the writing process? Was it hard working together? I imagine there must have been squabbles, as can be seen here. :P
Yeah, we squabble a lot. Thankfully, we have our mom to arbitrate. And when that doesn’t work, we consume a lot of chocolate. No kidding. You start to feel all those endorphins rushing through your system, and all the squabbling just melts away.

Who's your favourite character, and why?
Buddy. All the kid’s gave up their souls, sure, but of all of them, you get the feeling Buddy lost the most.

What song would you attribute to each of the major characters? It'll be the one song that (if this is a movie) will play when the character is introduced to the viewer for the first time, in slo mo.
Nicola Vileroy – Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria
Victoria – Skullcrusher Mountain by Jonathan Mountain
Valentin – The Feel Good Drag by Anberlin
Christian – All that I’ve Got by The Used
Bice – Heaven Forbid by The Fray
Belle – Flashing Lights by Kanye West

Do the children miss their families?
I don’t think many of them remember their families. It might have been included in the part they gave up.

Did they make the wish consciously, or did they make it without knowing? Why did they have to leave their families?
Well, they definitely had to leave their families. I think the devious part of Vileroy’s way is that she meets you where you are. And she’ll let you make the decision however you like.

Let's talk about the governess. What was Madame Vileroy before she became what she is now? Was she ever a human, or an overambitious demon who doesn't now when to cut her losses? Are there many of her kind, or better yet, only one of her but in many different forms?
Vileroy can take on a whole lot of forms, but that doesn’t mean she’s the only one. I think she has plenty of rivals, friends, and superiors that may rear their ugly (pretty?) heads in the future.

What does the red and blue box represent?
My favorite poem has the line, “…there will be time / to prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet.” I think the boxes represent something like that, the façade that the children had to build to interact with their peers.

Did Belle know what she was giving up, and made that choice anyway?
I think like most of us, Belle didn’t exactly think through all the consequences of her desire.

Tell us five good to know facts about you.

  • I dated my college sweetheart for 8 years before we got married a year ago.
  • Pink is my favorite color (my pink Converse are my favorite piece of clothing).
  • I have a cat named Kitten-Bear who head butts me every time I come home.
  • I’m a huge comic book, video game, board game geek.
  • I have a scar on my nose where I picked my chicken pox in the third grade.

Thanks for the interview, Daniel!
